Either labelled ’Orangé de Provence’, OrangeRed, Hargrand, Bergeron or other, all varieties have received an ideal amount sunshine around Mont Ventoux. Their extraordinary flavours are best enjoyed on the spot, when still soaked in the sunshine of Provence.
Apricot trees shape the landscape and in late winter spangle it with pink-tinged flowers. In season, farmers will be very proud to let you sample their produce, the result of hard work throughout the year. Out of season, you can sample dried apricots, as ice-cream or nectar. Apricots are rich in vitamin A, iron, copper and antioxidants. The kernel is also used for its cold-extracted oil. The oil is used in cosmetics.
There is a yearly apricot fair in Barroux.
If during your holiday in Ventoux your host invites you to pick your own apricots, you will be surprised by the squirt of fluid emitted by cicadas when fleeing.
